Prevent Throttle Body Plastic Pulley Failure on Your BMW R1200 – Here’s How

If you own a BMW R1200 — especially models like the R1200GS, R1200GSA, R1200RT, R nineT, R1200R, ST, or HP2 — you may be at risk of a hidden but serious issue: a broken throttle body cam.

The issue stems from a plastic pulley located inside the throttle body. This component functions like an eccentric pulley and serves as a transitional element between the throttle cable and the valve. Since it is made of plastic, it is prone to breaking over time without any warning signs.

Critically, when the cam breaks, the engine may still idle and run normally. However, once you apply throttle, control over one or both throttle valves may be lost. This disrupts proper engine response under load and can lead to a sudden inability to accelerate — a dangerous situation that often ends in roadside repatriation.

To avoid such unpredictable and stressful scenarios, it's wise to inspect and replace the factory cam proactively, even if no symptoms are yet present.

We are not here to frighten anyone — only to highlight a real issue that many riders are unaware of until it’s too late. A quick visual inspection can be performed using a small mirror tucked inside the throttle body from the engine side. While this doesn’t guarantee a perfect view, it allows for an initial check. For a thorough inspection, we strongly recommend removing the throttle body and examining it under bright light.

🔧 What You Need:

✅ No disassembly ! No drilling! No tapping!

Just a screwdriver and threadlocker — that’s it.This upgrade makes installation faster and easier than ever, while keeping the same rock-solid performance.

🛠️ Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Remove fairings if present to access the throttle body. On models without fairings, access is even easier as the throttle bodies are exposed.
  2. Inspect the old plastic cam – before removal, perform a visual inspection using a mirror to check for any cracking or deformation. Once removed, inspect closely for wear, cracks, or broken sections.
  3. Install the new aluminum cam – make sure it's seated properly
  4. Reassemble everything and check cable tension

✅ Why Use Our Kit?

  • ✔️ CNC-machined from 6082-T6 aluminum with anodized coating for enhanced corrosion resistance and durability – no more deformation or breakage. The part is installed in contact with stainless steel, which can lead to galvanic corrosion over time. However, the anodized layer acts as a barrier and prevents this type of material reaction, ensuring long-term compatibility and protection.
  • ✔️ Compatible with all R1200 models (2004–2012), including some up to 2014 and even 2013–2020 models like the R nineT
  • ✔️ Quick DIY install – no special tools needed
  • ✔️ Shipped worldwide with full 12-month warranty
